Max Cooper, from Traum, special and exclusive interview to Techno Minimal Senses!
Max Cooper is a London based musician and geneticist. The combination of these influences is evident in Max’s sets, technical production style and abstract research topics...Gaining inspiration from artists like QBert, DJ Craze, Baboo and DJ Noize, this amazing artist is growing year after year in the world techno scene.
01. Tell us about you ... how you discovered music, your influences and where you started?
"It was growing up in Belfast, Ireland, In the 90’s and getting involved in the massive rave/party scene that was going on then that got me into music in a serious way."
02. How would you characterize your style?
"It’s always difficult to explain my style to people as I don’t like to pigeonhole myself too much, and my style changes with every new track I write. But I guess I would say it’s chord-based techno that delivers some depth in terms of progression and emotion, or straight up groove for the dance floor, I like doing that stuff too."
03. How would you characterize the culture that Traum wants to transmit to the world?
"Traum pushes a sound that is very much what I’m in to, with forward thinking, musical techno and electronic, that smashes it on the dance floor, but can also be great home listening music."
04. In your opinion, who is the true "father" of the international techno scene?
"That’s a difficult question because depending on what country you are in, the word “techno” can mean very different things. I also don’t think there is any one leading figure in the whole of techno, perhaps only people that can be considered as leading their own sub-genres and movements. So my answer is Tadao Kikumoto. He invented the 303 and 909, so I guess you could call him the father of techno."
05. Tell us what are the five festivals where you would most like to play:
"Exit, Sonar, Melt, Glastonbury, Neopop."
06. Tell us what are the five clubs where you would most like to play:
"Womb, Berghain, Lightbox, Space, Marcus Garvey Ballroom!"
07. Do you consider that techno is a culture? Characterize it…
"There is definitely a lifestyle associated with techno so I think it could be referred to as a culture. A culture characterized by listening to techno, chin stroking, never getting bored of looped up kick drums and at the extremes a total disregard for other forms of music!"
08. Tell us something about your future projects…
"As well as writing music I also do research on the evolution of gene networks. Computer simulations of how genes evolve. I am working on a project to combine this research with my productions as part of a downtempo, experimental listening album for Traum."
09. Who are the artists that you most like to work with?
"Raw Hedroom is a great artist who I work with a lot, we have a collaborative release out soon, and more to follow. Extrawelt too, I am doing another remix for them and just like last time, have been inspired straight off to do something exciting with their track because I enjoy their work so much."
10. Portugal, it's an objective? When and where is the chosen club?
"Of course, I would love to play in Portugal, but nothing is booked in at the moment as far as I am aware."
B.Q. Do you like projects like Techno Minimal Senses? Why?
"I do like projects like techno minimal senses yes, it provides a link for people to quality music and reviews that they can trust…….not the ones at the shop that have to say that everything is great! There’s so much music around these days that projects like this are essential to keep up with the amazing stuff and miss out the faff."
*Max, many thanks for all your time and support!
